>> live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> in the news this sunday morning, october 28th, a tsunami warning has been cancelled in hawaii, fouling a powerful earthquake off the west coast of canada. and the giants will have a chance to sweep the tigers tonight after shutting out detroit last night. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck off canada's pacific coast last night doesn't appear to have caused any major damage and tsunami warnings have been downgraded this morning. the powerful undersea earthquake that struck the queens charlie islands area was followed by a

magnitude 5.8 after shock. it was felt in alaska's southeast communities, but most of the energy was sent to the southwest toward the hawaiian islands. so far there are no reports of major damage on land. the first waves are just now hitting the hawaiian island, but they are smaller than first predicted. the largest wave was measured on ma maui at 5 feet. last night's warning triggered coastal evacuations in hawaii but as we said it's been lowrd to an advisory. people in honolulu have been told they can return home. people are asked to stay away from the water for the next several hours. >> we're telling people yes, you can return home, and he better doing those things required ever us for due diligence and mack sure there would be nothing that would make it unsafe for them to return home and that's being

done right now. >> california remains under a tsunami advisory from waves in the pacific northwest have been measured in just inches. no damaging waves are expected here. we will check in with meteorologist lisa argen for the latest on the tsunami warning in hawaii. >> yes. hi, carolyn. as you noted, we are looking at condition of that improved there, but with the depth of the earthquake at about 11 feet we are looking at some better news for hawaii. so as you noted, 2.5 feet was recorded in the island of maui and 3 to 6-foot waves were predicted. as you noted, a tsunami advisory remains in effect for three counties up in northern california where crescent city has report bad 1.5-foot wave at 2:15 this morning and north spit, california, .5. no tsunami watch or warning in effect for northwestern california. that's the good news. we are continuing to see really

nice weather around here, as conditions are clear. no fog. temperatures right now in the 50s and we will look once again for the mild weather to return. numbers near 80 inland and a look tearing coming our way in a little bit later. carolyn. >> the giants are just one win away from taking their second world series in the past three seasons. and that could happen tonight in game four. last night it was gregor blanco who hit a go ahead triple to lead the giants to a 2-0 win over the tigers. the giants now lead the best-of-seven series three games to nothing. they are the first world series team to pitch consecutive shutouts since the 1966 baltimore orioles did it to the dodgers. mike shumann has all the highlights and player interviews coming up in sports in about 20 minutes. tonight's game is once again being played in detroit where the giants could wrap it all up. bay area giants fans can gather

to watch the fans on giant tv screens outside san francisco city hall. that's where abc7 news reporter karen clapper is joining us live now from civic center plaza with more. good morning, kera. >> good morning. it is a good morning here in downtown san francisco. this is where a jumbotron will be set up later this afternoon so families and fans can come here on and cheer on their gians and potentially a world championship. we have video from two years ago when it happened, the last world series appearance was publicly broadcast in civic center plaza. both times, two years ago and this year, they had to receive permission from major league baseball to show the game. but this time around the city is doing more to prepare for the anticipated revelry. here is what san francisco police are saying. >> if it does, we've taken steps to work with all the merchants

around the ballpark and we've been fantastic. we just want people to know don't drink and drive, and that's on any weekend and also be respectful of people, be respectful of other fans, be respectful to the police. we really just want to be be to be a really fun celebration when the giants bring this home. >> and the fans, the giants have said it themselves, they have the best fans in the world. thousands of those fans are expected to pack civic center plaza this afternoon, hoping to see their giants take it in four. >> do this thing! let's sweep them! four games and out, buddy! how do you like me now! i think it's a done deal. it is a done deal! go pablo! >> are you going to be okay with the four-game sweep? >> absolutely. christmas is coming early. you heard it from santa claus. in four!

>> san francisco mayor ed lee is enjoying giants fans to wear orange and black, of course, and support the hometown team. the giants' flag will continue to fly over city hall where i am and the ed lee and the detroit mayor are urging all fans to respect each other and leave all rivalries on the field. it will be right here on the jumbotron in civic center plaza. far off in the distance there's someone if a banda hat already in the front row this morning. abc7 news. >> it is exciting. thank you, kera. the giants victory is also a big win for south bay businesses hit hard by the national hockey league walk out. many are thankful for the giants world series appearance.

they died on the way to the hospital. the nanny had also stabbed herself several times. she is still alive, but investigators can't question her yet because of wounds to her neck. two teenagers were injured when they were hit by a car while walking across a street yesterday afternoon. the 14-year-old boys were in the crosswalk when they were struck by a 92-year-old man driving a car. one of the boys suffered a possible skull fracture. the other had minor cuts and bruises. sheriff's deputies say the man simply did not see the teens. speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the accident. there's a super storm poised to strike the mid-atlantic with strong winds, pounding rain, even snow. right now sandy is a tropical storm, bearing down on the carolinas with predictions of gale force winds and massive flooding and power outages over the coast today.

mandatory evacuations have been ordered in some areas as millions of people prepare. brandy hit is in till devil hills, north carolina. >> gusting winds, turning sur ever and crashing waves. all signs of sandy's pending arrival. >> i never get that nervous, but not feeling too good about this one. >> eight states from north carolina to new england have declared a state of emergency as the monster makes its way up the with the potential of dumping up to ten inches of rain in some areas and knock down trees and power lines. >> we should not unestimate the impact of this storm. >> sandy is speck to the run into a cold front and that will super charge it. >> this could set historical precedence if it develops along the lines that the american models are indicating. >> that kind of power could launch four to ten foot storm surges in vulnerable areas of

washington d.c., new jersey and new york. >> if it would strengthen unexpectedly or change its path it could do a lot of damage and you could be at risk. >> that's why families all along the east coast are boarding up, stocking up on food and water, generators and batteries and other supplies. >> prepare for the worst and hope for the best. >> bracing when sandy strikes. >> travel is expected to come to a screeching halt once sandy makes landfall. the new york city subway system will be shut down and some amtrak trains have already been cancelled. abc news, north carolina. that is going to really be a monster, lisa. >> yeah, it sure is. we are looking at the continuation of our very pleasant, quiet weather around here. >> nice. >> we have some fog to speak up around half moon bay, and a mile and a half by the delta. otherwise numbers in the 50s and we are talking about temperatures a little warmer

>> welcome back. thanks for getting up bright and early to join us on the abc7 sunday morning news. this is a live look at the ferry building. all lit up in orange, not for halloween, but, of course, it's for the giants. now one win away from doing it all. lisa, i'm wondering about the weather in detroit. everything okay there? >> yeah. they are going to see some more clouds. cool again, in the 40s. but everyone anticipateth big storm coming in early next week and we are looking right now at

our own weather changes happening, just subtly today along the shoreline. there's an increase in the onshore flow but that's not until late in the day. once again the temperatures will be on the warm side, especially for this time of the year. let's get you caught up on hurricane sandy right now. this is where it is. it is about 395 miles to the south of new york city. so it's pretty far south but you can see the rain bands already lashing parts of the carolinas from north carolina, pushing up through south carolina. here's that strong cold front moving through western new york. so these two systems, yes, will merge and make for this huge super storm with that storm surge anywhere from four to ten feet from washington d.c., new york city and then look what happens. we are talking about snow through western new york, into ohio. so this is how big it is. it is going to spread from the coastal regions all the way back through the ohio valley there. so some big-time problems

anticipated with the rain, the prolonged time that this is all going to be in the area for monday into tuesday and, of course, the strong winds. 60 mile-an-hour winds, up to hurricane-force winds. in fact, we will be look at the downed power lines and people without power for several days. back home live doppler 7hd, nice and quiet out there with a few clouds around. the low clouds along the coast and the delta. we will be enjoying this weather for the next several days beforing things begin to change and high pressure slides to the east of us. right now it's 54 in fairfield, 57 in san francisco. some pretty mild numbers from the upper 50s mountain view, 51 in san jose yesterday. you dropped to the upper 40s." so we are anywhere from two to five degrees warmer in some spots, 6 degrees warming this morning compared to yesterday in fremont. with the atmosphere retaining some of the moisture, we are looking at more sunshine today and warmth out there. we will look for the numbers

today to be just on the other side of 80 degrees, although that sea breeze is going to pick up and cool off our coast by the afternoon hours and bring the fog back for your monday morning commute. here's the situation. we've got this ridge of high pressure keeping the storm track to the north. with that high pressure ridge protecting us today, bringing the winds from a more milder place, the inland. overall we are looking at the onshore flow but a slight offshore flow so that's why we see the temperatures warm up today. but the winds will return to more of an onshore component, allowing the temperatures to cool agent bit the beginning of the week. look at los angeles, once again 85 degrees, above normal. 76 in oakland. that's a few degrees warmer than yesterday. 73 downtown with 78 in san jose and down by the monterey bay we are looking at another warm day for gilroy. highs in the low 80s. breezy conditions in detroit,

mid-40s, winds out of the north at so to 20 miles an hour. back home very little change and we're talking about temperatures coming down and then the rain moving in by wednesday. >> just in time for halloween to soak the kids and the candy. >> that's right. but it lacks like more of a north bay event and then looks like we will be dry again by next weekend. >> thank you, lisa. let's check out sports. this afternoon the raiders are in kansas city to play the rival chiefs. tonight in detroit you know the giants have an opportunity to sweep the tigers and win the world series for the second time in three years. last night the giants' pitchers shut down the tigers to go up 3-0 in the series. here's larry beil with the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning, everybody. the giants have taken a stranglehold on the tigers in the world series. the tigers blank -- being blanked again last night.

promises he made during his first campaign. romney says he won't do that. he also said his tenure as president will include more cooperation across the isle. romney told the crowd now is not the time to demonize political opponents. he says he wants to build bridges with democrats. president obama and vice president joe biden are off the campaign trail today. yesterday the president rallied the crowd of 8500 people in new hampshire. he hit mitt romney on his record as massachusetts's governor. president obama saying that romney targeted the middle class with unnecessary fees and taxes. the president also said it will be hard for romney to accomplish all of the last-minute promises he is making right now. both the president and romney have cancelled campaign stops because of hurricane sandy. the romney campaign says a scheduled stop in the swing state of virginia will not

has the story from oakland. >> she is a volunteer going door to door in this direct to make sure the voters know the issues and get out to vote. she's part of a few dozen men and women who volunteer to walk presinks for "oakland rising." she said this is important enough to do whatever she can do to help. >> if they see my face, they see my face and then i can get them out and tell them it's important, we need you. >> this election has local, as well as national issues that everyone should be concerned about, according to this woman, the executive collector of oakland rising. >> we want to make sure people are clear about what is going to be on the ballot and mack sure they feel motivated and clear about getting out to vote. >> i'm a local republican volunteer. >> while democrats are walking the districts in oakland, democrats are walking those in contra costa counties. they are on the phone make sure the republicans know the issues,

candidates and get out to vote. the chair of the california republican party said republicans have been energized by the presidential debates. >> i don't know if it was just the debates or the fact it is the last month of election but we have had a surge sense the first debate. >> becky, the chair of the contra costa republican party, says the phone banks are the tip of the get to utility to vote effort in the county. >> the last two weeks we've walked permanent absentee republican voters and now we are walking walk-in voters. so our emphasis is on getting out the vote. >> the department of elections wants to remind everyone that this coming tuesday, october 30th, is the last day to request vote by mail ballots. in oakland, abc7 news. 33 new fire department recruits in san jose begin training tomorrow. it's the largest number of recruits the city has ever trained at one time. the previous record 30 set three

years ago. an $8.6 million grant provided by the federal emergency management agency is going to pay for the new firefighters. the recruits about bring the department back to 683 firefighters, just shy of what the department had four years ago. police in the south bay think they have nabbed the so-called beanie bandit accused of robbing at least six banks. they released this photo of him taken from a surveillance camera taken during one of the rob business. investigators say over the past two months this has been of campbell held up banks in campbell, san jose, loss got toes and sunnyvale. police say they have evidence linking him to all six robberies. >> hundreds of bay area emergency personnel are spinning this weekend training for extreme emergency operations. training started yesterday morning in more than a dozen cities in hay wood. crews practiced repelling down the side of a building at cal state university east bay.

other exercise necessary the area include a mach airplane hijacking in oakland and chemical sabotage in castro valley. all the training helps officers gain individual tactty cal skills and it helps departments coordinate their resources. the exercises are going on across the nation as heart of homeland security training >> a new law enforcement tool in alameda county is raising fierce of big brother. the tool is a drone. that drone that weighs less than four pounds has an hd camera and flies at 400 feet above ground. the drone will be used primarily to follow criminals on the run, but critics have their doubts, even if it's cheaper than a helicopter. >> with a helicopter, the cost 2 to $3 million with $400 to $600 an hour in flight costs. this system, $40,000. >> we absolutely need more information.

drones are subject to tremendous potential abuse, given the wealth of information they can collect we risk proceeding into a complete surveillance state. >> the aclu is concerned residents' privacy will be compromised. they have submitted a public records act request to the sheriff. in lafayette the 120 day stay period for massage parlor to become state certified begins tomorrow. police say they will begin enforcing compliance right away to find which is that operate at fronts for prostitution. a new ordinance requires all massage therapists and practicers operating in lafayette be certified with the c. massage therapy counsel sil. they must register every year with police. masseuses who are not already state certified will be required to undergo extensive background checks. coming up next, tree trouble in the bay area. the one in front of your home

it's a precaution after a water main break friday evening. crews had it plugged and returned toilet and hydrant water to the area yesterday morning but the pipe still needs to be repaired. little league teams are being asked not to drink from fountains as any of the baseball fields until the water is tested tomorrow to mack sure it is safe for drinking. san francisco likes to tout itself as a green city but there's a renewed push for transferring the obligation to maintain the city's trees to homeowners. some of just learning about the change in policy and they are not happy about it. >> san francisco has about 100,000 street trees, most of them about 65,000, are privately maintained by property owners. some, like lisa, have decided on their own to plant trees to soften and beautify the environment. but she's opposed to a new city push that will force her neighbors to take responsibility

for something that has always been outside their front door. >> i think it is an imposition for people who have inherited a tree. >> the job of tree maintenance belongs to the department of public works. but after years of public cuts it can't -- budget cuts it can't keep up with pruning trees in the right-of-way, let alone those on the sidewalks. but the supervisor said the decision to transfer the responsibility of 24,000 trees to homeowners is not the answer. it makes no sense for us to require property owners to take care of street trees that they may not own, they may not want, they may not know how to take care of, they may not able to afford to take care of. >> wiener unsuccessfully fought for more funding in the last budge he. he said a parcel tax could now be an option. but that might be a hard sell. kate smith has already spent thousands planning trees in front of her home.

patients with a cardiostress test, often involving a treadmill. now a bay area company believes it has an alternative that can help spot which patients are more likely suffering from heart disease more quickly. >> maybe an alcohol pad, bandaid, gauze. >> it was developed by palo alto based dx. it involves a blood draw that can be done at a doctors office but what happens after that is extremely sophisticated science. >> once the blood is drawn from the patient, we bring it into our lab at palo alto and it's a three step process. >> the first step involved automated machines that extract rna from the blood cells, which is then used to sin they size a complete dna sample. >> the final step we put it on this machine that measures the 23 genes in our algorithm. >> it's ultimately measuring gene expression. look for what genes are turned

on what a patient's heart is diseased. it gives a strong case whether a park sent suffering from heart disease. >> with our test we can easily and quickly identify those patients where the chest pain is unlikely to be caused by a block in the coronary artery. >> he believes the blood test could reduce the false positives and unnecessary angiograms while giving patients who do need them a quicker diagnosis. >> if someone needs an invasive test or not or can i watch them more closely before commit to go doing a test. >> in his case it did eventually lead to an angiogram which led to a blockage of. he had a stint placed in his artery which allowed him to return to the golf course. >> it's a nine hole course but we really enjoy it. >> that was health and science reporter carolyn johnson. that test runs just un$1,200 and is now covered by medicare, but

big ridge of high pressure blocking it from moving up into the canadian maritime. so because of that, we are looking at this huge storm blows coming, two storms coming together and the snow on the back side of it from the ohio valley, western new york, and we are looking at a huge storm surge anywhere from four to ten feet. washington d.c., new york, prolonged rain and windy condition asks, we are talking several hours or maybe a whole day or two which could bring down the power lines and really triple over 50 million people along the east coast. we are talking right now very calm conditions and no fog being picked up yet from live doppler 7hd but that will change later on this afternoon. but temperatures are mild, 59 in antioch with fog at a mile and a half visibility there. right now some of the fog at 1500, 600 feet and that will continue to develop. but not everyone will see, it's going to take several days for the area to look for the low
